Law Makers and Breakers ......
Barely a week after celebrating AIDS day , comes the good news .The Planning Commission is getting all ready to "legalise" the oldest of professions in India ..prostitution.A slap in the face of all those activists , and AIDS "hafta" collection(read donations) lot to spread the "awareness" !!!
After scores of debates with my friends about this topic , i yet yet maintain , that it's NOT the way out !! Just because our "phoren" counterparts are legalising it ...We do it ??
The reasons these law-makers give, make you wonder where the future of our country lies with politicians with pea-sized-brains and pumpkin sized pot-bellies.
"We wish to provide better education for their children , better health facilities , security ,check-ups and other awareness programs " .
Why not now ?? Do it now ...provide better facilities and health camps ...now !!! A particular prostitute on tv ...when asked to give her know-hows on AIDS and how she was exposed to it ...said this ,
" Mujhe tho AIDS ho hi nahin sakta , mein roj DETTOL se nahati hoon !!!" I possibly can't get AIDS , because i bathe using DETTOL soap !!
These ignorant women ,fight poverty , face the dangers of sexually transnmitted diseases , and live in the dirt of red-light areas , not forgetting the rejection they face from society. To add to the list now , is the long list of men ...er licensed men who seek their services , after the rule gets implemented.
Dont even think about security .. Most of the prostitutes , arrested ,are dropped back to their respective brothels after a day or two !!
Do i have to even tell you why !!
And for those who think , that it's not always Oh-those-poor-little prostitutes , and there are women willing to do the profession , let me tell you that the "AVERAGE" age of prostitutes in India is just 13 years!! Which of the abnormalest 13 year old thinks of becoming a prostitute ??
I am not one of those people who say that "prostitution be abolished ".
Its impossible to achieve that in a country where the sex ratio of women to men is roughly 600 women to 1000 men.
What the new law is going to do is "market the woman" as a commodity!

Very gud blog..
the last line was Awesome .. clearly shows the way our administration looks at this matter.
yup ended nicely......
did you not know that "the future of our country lies with politicians with pea-sized-brains and pumpkin sized pot-bellies".They are corrupt too dont forget.
I wanna know how to get the 90 million of the 1 billion+ people in this country to unite and do something....rather than just say "nothing can happen"..and make plans to emigrate....(and yes...i do exactly that)
Well, true true true. Last line is a great punch dialog;)
Though I suppose I am a bit too young to have a say on these things, One thing I can say : The Basic Qualification to become a Politician is to be an absoulte Moron and also to have all the bad habits in the world, which also includes prostitution......
Wonder how many more Sex Scandals will be brought to light. Suppose most MPs must be checked for STDs before being allowed to stand for elections;)
Jomy, I dont mean to be rude but do get your facts straight. The sex ratio in India is 933:1000 (source: Wikipedia). I also wonder where you got the average age from.
Legalization of prostitution does not imply that the government approves of it. It's like you mentioned in your article, the kind of people who visit prostitutes will do so anyway, regardless of legality. What this does mean is that these women can now at least not have to live in fear of the police, and of having to visit a clinic to seek help. Social stigma is just that, a societal problem, the only ones who can change that is you and me, not the government.
I'm no expert on this, but I think that this is a smart move on the part of the government. For a real expert's advice, ask Jax on FM. Seriously.
Whoa, I just checked, that post was quite a while back! Why dontcha post more often?
PS, I now have a blog! Don't read it, though...
Jim !! !! I had to read ur comment twice ..to understand what to trying to say !!
Anyways , these figures appeared in the TOI , a few months back !!! So , its upto you , as to who you choose to believe ...Wikipedia or The TOI !!!
As for the fear factor , medical help , and the other things that you mention , is precisely what I'm saying ...but they can do that w/o the license tag also. This is because ,apart from the people who visit them anyways, dont u think, they would be others, armed with licenses , waiting for the opportunity ??
Im just not ready to believe that with a corrupt system that we have ,eventually the rule would actually get implemented , and these women would actually get all the above. If they do , nuthing like it !!!
As for blogging , engg ma frannd , its taking its toll on me !!!
Well, I guess the essence of what I was saying is "if you criminalize something, you only drive it underground".
This is a highly stretched analogy, but a guy needs his sleep and right now I'm not getting any! Imagine if tomorrow all engineering students were branded as criminals. You have an engineering drawing exam in a week, you need a drafter. Given that engg students are now criminals, you can't just walk up to a shop and buy a drafter, you need to get in touch with someone who knows someone who knows someone else who can get you a second-hand drafter for twice the price of a new one. Most importantly, he won't rat you out to the cops. Lose a drafter, you probably flunk an exam and do it again. Unable to get medical help? St. Peter's just waiting for you at the pearly gates.
Choose between Wikipedia and TOI? The wiki any day.
Good luck with your engineering course!
Please elaborate ..i just dont get the connection ...
And if trust the Wiki ...good for you ...dont start accusing people of 'NOT' checking up stuff ....
Jot ur last line rocked...!!
and so does ur discussion above...
Hey Jomy! I dint know you thought so strongly about stuff (Ne stuff actually). We just conducted a session on HIV-AIDS and its challenges in church. The youth took up the initiative. Fr. Tomy had come from Bel-Air hospital to give the talk. There are a lot of misconceptions about HIV and AIDS. He said that its the ppl in the age group of 20 - 40 who are mostly being infected by this deadly virus. And this virus not spread by a cut on the face from a barbers knife who just shaved a man's beard who has HIV. Or by a poke from a needele in a theater or from pani puri. Most people who have been infected, is by unhealthy sexual practices. Its not just the prostitutes... its all of us who are at risk. India is No. 1 with loads and loads of ppl who get infected everyday. Prevention is the "only" cure to HIV. And Being aware of how it is spread is the only way to protect yourself. We cannot be indifferent about this very dangerous and serious problem anymore. Human Immuno Virus.... Its humans who are affected by this virus not cats and dogs or even chickens... Our friends could get infected... sometimes by just marrying the wrong guy or gal... not their fault coz u dont know if that person is infected by just looking at them. And it is almost impossible to find out if ur infected in the first three months from the day u were infected.... Educate each other... n dont be scared to talk of it openly... Dont be indifferent, Its our and the coming generation which is at risk. If you want your kids to grow up in a healthy environment, now is the time to learn stuff that were not talked about b4.Its only few percentage of ppl who are infected with HIV coz of blood transfusion or drug use... Jaagoo... V all need a Wake up call
